A Chandra Search for X-ray Counterparts to Supernova Remnants in Nearby Galaxies
Abstract
Studies of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are typically impeded by suchfactors as extensive absorption along Galactic lines of sight andsignificant uncertainties in the distances to these sources. To helpaddress these known shortcomings and to explore several issues related toSNR evolution (such as SNR-interstellar medium interactions and cosmic-rayacceleration), we have analyzed original and archived Chandra observationsof a sample of nearby face-on spiral galaxies to search for X-raycounterparts to known SNRs. Results of this search will bepresented, including discussions of wavelength-dependent selection effectsin searches for SNRs and the possible detection of several X-ray binary/SNRsystems in these galaxies.
